Ghana implements TraffiTech-GH automated traffic enforcement system
Ghana has launched TraffiTech-GH, a camera-based automated traffic enforcement system designed to detect speeding and red-light violations. The initiative, managed by the Ghana Police Service, aims to modernize traffic enforcement, reduce roadside bribery, and improve road safety by providing digital evidence of offences.
The rollout has met with significant debate. Critics and journalists, including Manasseh Azure Awuni, have raised concerns regarding the fairness of punishing motorists when road signage, speed limits, and lane markings are often missing or poorly maintained. Additionally, some political figures have questioned the timing of the system amid national economic hardships.
Commercial driver unions have threatened a nationwide strike, citing selective enforcement and demanding that authorities address the issue of traders occupying bus stops and terminals. Meanwhile, the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has warned that motorists must settle fines within 14 days to avoid a daily late penalty of 1 percent. Authorities have also issued warnings regarding scammers sending fraudulent traffic fine messages via SMS.
