Ghanaian diaspora celebrates Homowo festival and Sankofa Square inauguration in Toronto

The Ga‑Adangbe community in Toronto marked the annual Homowo Festival, a traditional celebration that honors the Ga people's historic victory over famine. Thousands gathered for drumming, dancing, libations and shared meals such as kpokpoi, reinforcing cultural identity far from Ghana.

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Ghana and Panama, the city renamed Yonge‑Dundas Square to "Sankofa Square". The ceremony was led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, and attended by about 5,000 people, including Canadian officials, business leaders and members of the Ghanaian diaspora. The event showcased Ghanaian music, dance and cuisine, highlighting the growing presence of Ghanaian culture in Toronto.
