Ghanaian evacuees form ‘Evacuation Boys’ to support sanitation

A group of Ghanaian evacuees from South Africa, calling themselves the ‘Evacuation Boys,’ has pledged to support Ghana’s national development through sanitation and environmental cleanliness initiatives. Operating under the slogan, ‘Evacuation Boys; We Came Back to Give Back,’ the group aims to channel the traumatic experiences they endured during xenophobic attacks in South Africa into positive community contributions.

The group was part of a recent arrival of 86 evacuees at Accra International Airport on August 17, 2026, as part of the second phase of a government repatriation exercise. This latest arrival brings the total number of Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa to over 1,700.

Group leader Richard Addai stated that their return is an opportunity to contribute to the country, appealing to the government and private sector for support to help members reintegrate and contribute meaningfully to the nation.
