Ghanaian leaders debate freedom of expression and hate speech

Ghanaian political leaders are debating the state of freedom of expression and the rise of hate speech within the country. Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has endorsed President John Mahama’s proposal for a national stakeholder engagement. This dialogue, involving the Media Foundation for West Africa and the Ghana Journalists Association, aims to address abusive online content and digital communication while protecting the right to dissent.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has raised concerns regarding the shrinking civic space and the systemic pressure on constitutional liberties. He urged the youth to defend democratic principles against perceived injustices. Afenyo-Markin also criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its use of inflammatory rhetoric, calling on President Mahama to take proactive measures to curb hate speech within his own party.

In a separate defense of his previous remarks, Afenyo-Markin clarified that his description of Ghana as a potential cocaine “hub” was intended as a metaphor. He argued the comment was meant to illustrate how inadequate border controls could turn the country into a transshipment point for illegal drugs.
