Ghanaian leaders propose incentives to attract youth to agriculture
Calls have been made in Ghana to incentivize youth involvement in agriculture through educational support and improved sector perception. Musician Okyeame Kwame proposed making university education free for children of farmers. He argued that such a policy would encourage young people to pursue the profession, helping to strengthen national food production and reduce reliance on imported goods.
In the Central Region, Osadeayo Ayeboafo Etuaful, the Sanahene of the Enyan Denkyira Traditional Council, noted that many children of farmers are avoiding agriculture in favor of politics, which they perceive as a faster route to wealth and luxury. He urged the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to revamp the sector to make it more attractive. Additionally, Patrick Ayuba Quansah, President of the Central Regional Fruits Producers Union, called for traditional authorities to assist youth by providing access to suitable land to foster sustainable fruit production.
