Ghanaian Minister inspects stalled Kumasi market projects

Ghanaian Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, inspected the stalled Kejetia Phase II and Krofrom Market projects in Kumasi on August 30, 2026. The visit, accompanied by Kumasi Mayor Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang and other stakeholders, aimed to assess the deterioration of the sites and identify obstacles to resuming construction.

The Kejetia Market Phase II project has been stalled for over three years despite being approximately 70 per cent complete. The Krofrom Market project, initiated in 2007, has faced delays for over a decade due to irregular funding. These delays have caused significant commercial congestion in Kumasi, forcing traders onto streets and pavements.

To address the Krofrom Market completion, which requires an estimated GH¢179 million, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly announced in May 2026 that GH¢100 million had been secured through the government's Social Investment Fund. Minister Ayariga emphasized the need for coordinated action between the central government and local authorities to mobilize resources and finalize the projects.
