Ghana Minority files motion to review Speaker’s drug inquiry rejection

The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has filed a formal motion to review Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to reject a proposed inquiry into recent major drug seizures. The motion, filed via First Deputy Whip Habib Iddrisu under Standing Order 127, challenges a September 2026 ruling that declared the investigation inadmissible.

Speaker Bagbin previously ruled that the inquiry could interfere with ongoing criminal proceedings involving approximately 21 individuals across four narcotics cases. However, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin argued that the existence of judicial proceedings should not prevent Parliament from exercising its constitutional oversight. He stated the goal is not to determine individual guilt, but to examine institutional failures in port security, customs controls, and intelligence-sharing.

The Minority cited several significant seizures, including 3.9 tonnes of cocaine valued at approximately €225 million intercepted at the Port of Dunkirk in France, as well as incidents in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Sydney, and within Ghana.
