Ghanaian Minority Leader accuses government of intimidation

Ghanaian Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the incumbent government of using state machinery to intimidate and silence the opposition. Speaking to the media following a parliamentary walkout on November 3, 2026, Afenyo-Markin described the government's actions as a coordinated, autocratic abuse of power intended to prevent the Minority Caucus from holding the administration accountable.

The tension follows an incident involving Damongo MP Samuel Abu Jinapor, who was escorted from the Chamber by a Parliamentary Marshal after refusing to withdraw allegations against Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The allegations involve the purported sale of diplomatic passports for sums ranging from $10,000 to $50,000.

Afenyo-Markin stated that while the Minority accepts lawful accountability for all citizens, they will resist the conversion of state power into an instrument of political submission. He emphasized that the caucus remains committed to its constitutional responsibility to scrutinize government policies despite facing arrests, detention, and harassment.
