Ghanaian officials call for investment in girls' health and education
Stakeholders in Ghana, including the Ghana Education Service (GES) and The Church of Pentecost, are calling for increased investment in the reproductive health, education, and safety of girls. During International Day of the Girl Child celebrations, officials emphasized that empowerment must extend beyond financial aid to include secure school environments, emotional support, and protection from abuse and discrimination.
In the Eastern Region, officials highlighted the need to end child marriage and address teenage pregnancy, noting a pregnancy rate of approximately 14 percent. Leaders stressed that involving boys in reproductive health education is essential to reducing teenage pregnancy and promoting gender equality.
To support personal hygiene and school attendance, approximately 1,500 students received sanitary products and clothing valued at over GH¢40,000. Organizers urged parents, teachers, and community leaders to create safe learning environments and ensure girls have access to nutritious food, clean water, and adequate sanitation.
