Ghanaian officials urge media investment and accountability
Ghanaian government officials have called for increased investment in journalism and greater professional accountability during the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards.
Deputy Minister for Education Dr. Clement Abas Apaak emphasized that media organizations must provide journalists with the necessary resources, such as time, transport, and access to information, to produce credible investigative work. He urged public institutions to view journalistic inquiries as legitimate accountability measures rather than personal attacks, stating, “A journalist’s question is not automatically an attack.”
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah also addressed journalists, stressing the importance of accuracy, fairness, and the separation of facts from allegations. While acknowledging the media's vital role in democracy, he warned that the drive to publish quickly should not compromise national peace or individual rights. Debrah further encouraged the GJA to engage with digital content creators through training and mentorship to ensure innovation aligns with professional standards.
