Ghanaian Parliament demands answers over Commonwealth Games welfare failures

The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has demanded an explanation from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation regarding alleged systemic welfare and administrative failures affecting the Ghanaian contingent at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Youth and Sports, cited reports of significant logistical issues. These include athletes receiving airline tickets late, some lacking luggage allowances, and others being unable to locate their tickets. Some participants were reportedly forced to abandon scheduled flights or seek alternative transportation via bus or train.

Further allegations include the late arrival of competition kits, with some athletes receiving gear only after their events concluded. The Minority also noted a lack of communication regarding per diem and medal bonus arrangements. Concerns were raised regarding accommodation, noting that approximately 90 per cent of officials were housed at one hotel while athletes stayed elsewhere, potentially lacking adequate supervision.

Specific grievances were highlighted regarding a para athlete who was reportedly checked out of his hotel shortly after competing without receiving his per diem. The caucus linked these issues to previous complaints from the Black Queens regarding unpaid bonuses and inadequate support.
