Ghanaian Parliament disputes GH¢22bn Gold Board losses

A political dispute has emerged in Ghana's Parliament regarding reported losses of US$1.7 billion (approximately GH¢22 billion) linked to the government's gold purchasing programme through the Ghana Gold Board and the Bank of Ghana.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for a parliamentary investigation, seeking to establish whether these figures stem from foreign exchange movements, gold pricing, or official decision-making. He warned that such losses could eventually require taxpayers to recapitalize the central bank. In response, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga characterized the expenditures not as losses, but as policy costs necessary to stabilize the cedi and manage inflation.

In support of the Minority Leader, the Central Regional executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have condemned attacks on Afenyo-Markin. Party members argued that the Minority Leader is performing his constitutional duty by demanding accountability for taxpayer resources, suggesting the disputed funds could have been used for national priorities such as healthcare infrastructure.
