Ghanaian Parliament faces calls for probe and mourning for Ambassador

The Suma Ahenkoro Traditional Council has formally notified the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, of the death of Ambassador Nana Asum Ahinsah. A delegation led by Nana Kwame Kwarfo II visited Parliament to communicate the loss and discuss funeral arrangements. The late Ambassador was a former Member of Parliament for the Jaman North Constituency, Ghana’s Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea, and an educator. Funeral rites are scheduled from October 28 to October 30, 2026, in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region.

Separately, a group of more than 48 Minority Members of Parliament, led by First Deputy Minority Whip Habib Iddrisu, has petitioned the Speaker to convene an extraordinary sitting to address national security concerns regarding major narcotics seizures. The petition follows the seizure of nearly 3.9 metric tonnes of cocaine, valued at over US$260 million, at the Port of Dunkirk in France. The drugs were reportedly concealed in a container of plastic waste departing from Ghana. The lawmakers are calling for an investigation into the integrity of Ghana’s ports, customs, and intelligence systems, citing a series of high-profile drug interceptions linked to the country since 2025.
