Ghanaian political figures criticize NPP Supreme Court term-limit case
Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Supreme Court case regarding presidential term limits, calling it a waste of the court’s time. Tameklo argued that the NPP failed to properly invoke the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction under Article 2 of the 1992 Constitution, as the party did not identify a specific act or omission by a person to challenge.
Similarly, Edudzi Tamakloe, CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, stated that the Supreme Court is not a forum for seeking legal opinions or advice. He suggested that the NPP is attempting to present political concerns as constitutional matters rather than resolving a genuine dispute. He noted that legal opinions should be sought from law firms rather than the country’s highest court.
The NPP filed a writ seeking an interpretation of Articles 58 and 66 of the Constitution. The party is requesting declarations that an individual may only be elected president twice, regardless of whether the terms are consecutive or separated by other periods, and that no person may occupy the presidency for more than eight years in total.
