Ghanaian political figures weigh strategies for 2028 elections

Political figures in Ghana are discussing the strategic implications of the upcoming 2028 elections. John Boadu, a former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and candidate for the party's General Secretary position, warned that failing to win in 2028 would create a significant disadvantage for the NPP in 2032. He noted that a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would allow the governing party to field a fresh presidential candidate in 2032 who would benefit from the advantages of incumbency without the baggage of a previous term.

Journalist Paul Adom-Otchere suggested that while the NDC currently holds an advantage due to being in power, the election is “NDC’s to lose.” He observed that the NPP is beginning to energize its base, particularly in the Ashanti Region. Adom-Otchere cautioned that the NDC must address public concerns regarding governance, including teacher training, food programs, and police recruitment, to maintain its position.
