Ghanaian political leaders exchange warnings over accountability and legal consequences

Political leaders from Ghana's major parties have issued contrasting statements regarding accountability and legal consequences for political figures.

Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stated that the party will not protect individuals found to have stolen state funds, regardless of whether the NDC is in power or in opposition. Gbande emphasized that the party remains committed to accountability and that anyone who misappropriates government money should face legal consequences.

In response to current political tensions, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, the newly elected National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), threatened to implement a $500 million bail bond for alleged offenders associated with the NDC if the NPP returns to power. Yakubu accused the current administration of using state institutions to intimidate critics and restrict free speech, particularly regarding social media commentary.
