Ghanaian President reaffirms judicial independence at JUSAG conference

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his respect for the independence of Ghana’s Judiciary, stating that judicial autonomy is a constitutional guarantee rather than a favor from the Executive branch. The President’s position was delivered by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah during the opening of the 2nd Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference of the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) at the University for Development Studies in Tamale.

The five-day conference, themed “Championing Staff Welfare and Technology: Anchors of Quality Justice,” runs from August 24 to August 29, 2026. Debrah emphasized that while the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary hold distinct responsibilities, they are bound by the shared purpose of upholding the rule of law. He assured the Judiciary that the government would continue to work constructively with the institution while respecting its autonomy to improve justice administration and access.

Debrah also commended the more than 5,000 employees of the Judicial Service, noting that while public attention often centers on judges, the professionalism of registrars, clerks, bailiffs, and other support staff is indispensable to the functioning of the courts and public confidence in the justice system.
