Ghanaian PTA groups demand review of BECE results

Stakeholders in Ghana are addressing concerns regarding the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) performance and the subsequent school placement process. The National Council of Parent-Teacher-Association (NCPTA) has called for a technical review of the 2026 BECE assessment and results-processing. General Secretary Raphael Kofi Gapson stated that the review should involve independent experts to examine marking, moderation, score processing, and the integrity of the electronic system to strengthen public confidence in the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Gapson emphasized the need for WAEC to provide clear explanations of the grading system, including how raw marks are converted to grades and how standardization operates. He also called for transparency regarding withheld results and established mechanisms for candidates to seek clarification or appeals.

Separately, the Eastern Regional PTA Chairman, Rev. Joshua Terkpenor, urged parents to take responsibility for their children's performance and the challenges within the Computerised School Placement System. He noted that some parents create difficulties by insisting on elite schools despite inadequate grades or by selecting schools based on the hope of changing preferences after results are released. Terkpenor suggested that stakeholders should work to equalize the quality of different school categories to reduce placement friction.
