Ghanaian residents protest poor roads and rice surplus

Residents of Akuse, Asutsuare, and surrounding communities in Ghana's Shai-Osudoku District staged a peaceful protest to demand government intervention regarding deteriorating infrastructure and agricultural crises. Organized by the Osudoku Youth Association, the demonstration involved farmers, fishers, traders, and youth who marched to present a petition to President John Dramani Mahama.

A primary grievance is the dilapidated state of the Akuse-Amedeka-Asutsuare road and other local routes, which protesters described as nearly impassable. The poor road conditions have increased the cost of transporting farm produce and hindered trade in an area known for banana plantations, rice farming, and tilapia production.

Additionally, rice farmers in the region are facing significant financial losses due to unsold stocks. Despite bumper harvests, local producers struggle to compete with imported rice. Demonstrators have called on the government to protect the local industry and requested that the National Food Buffer Stock Company purchase accumulated stocks to support farmers.
