The Gambia government orders probes into local council officials

The Gambian government has published a White Paper following a presidential commission of inquiry into the administration and financial management of the country’s eight local government councils. The report outlines measures to strengthen accountability, financial discipline, and good governance through administrative and institutional reforms.

As part of the findings, the government has moved to have Banjul Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe removed from office and has ordered a criminal investigation by the Inspector General of Police. The probe will examine allegations of economic crime, procurement irregularities, and conflicts of interest, including unauthorized legal fees, the acquisition of a vehicle through a private initiative, and a contract for dustbins.

Additionally, the government has ordered a police investigation into former Brikama Area Council chairman Sheriffo Sonko. The inquiry identified financial irregularities, including understated revenue, unlawful procurement processes, and unauthorized land transactions. The government has also referred Sonko’s fitness for public service to the Public Service Commission and initiated recovery proceedings for public funds.
