Ghanaian students face representation and housing crises

Ghanaian tertiary students are facing significant challenges regarding student representation and the rising cost of living. Selma Yoda, a presidential candidate for the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), has called for the union to rebuild its visibility and regain student trust. She noted that many students are unaware of NUGS's role and emphasized the need for the organization to remain independent from political infiltration to effectively represent student interests.

Simultaneously, a crisis in student accommodation is placing immense financial pressure on students and their families. High fees in the private hostel market, driven by a chronic shortage of on-campus housing, have become a major barrier to education. In response, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced the formation of a tripartite committee involving the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and university authorities to investigate price hikes and prevent exploitation by private providers.
