Ghanaian tanker drivers suspend strike with one-month ultimatum

The Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has suspended its two-day sit-down strike, effective September 4, 2026. The suspension follows interventions by the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) and the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC).

While normal fuel haulage operations have resumed, the Union has issued a one-month ultimatum to the government. Drivers demand visible and measurable progress regarding the rehabilitation of deteriorating roads near key petroleum depots. Specific areas of concern include the corridor from the Valco Roundabout in Tema to Kpone Junction, as well as roads within the Takoradi and Buipe depot enclaves.

The Union described these routes as critical national economic corridors, noting that activities facilitated by these roads generate approximately GH¢300 million in weekly tax revenue. Drivers warned that if the government fails to address the safety and health risks posed by the neglected infrastructure within the month, they will resume industrial action.
