Ghanaian teacher unions condemn Interior Minister over WASSCE forgery remarks

Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka has announced the dismissal of several security service recruits after the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) identified forged or doctored WASSCE results during the verification process. The Minister stated that affected individuals will be placed on a red list to prevent future recruitment into any Ghanaian security services, and noted that prosecution is being considered for those found culpable.

Following these remarks, Ghana’s three major pre-tertiary teacher unions—the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG)—issued a joint condemnation. The unions described the Minister’s comments as ‘offensive, misguided and derogatory,’ specifically targeting his suggestion that the responsibility for forged certificates should lie with the education sector rather than the security services. The unions warned they would not accept being made scapegoats for failures in the recruitment and verification processes of other institutions.
