Ghanaian Vice President calls for action on UN slavery resolution

Ghanaian Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called for concrete action following the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of Resolution 82/50. The resolution formally recognizes the trafficking of enslaved Africans and the system of racialized chattel enslavement as crimes against humanity.

Speaking at a memorial service in Cape Coast, the Vice President emphasized that the resolution should serve as a foundation for justice rather than a final goal. She identified five critical areas for subsequent international focus: education, the preservation of heritage sites, restitution, legal pathways for accountability, and sustained international engagement. She specifically urged for educational curricula to accurately reflect the historical operations and lasting consequences of the slave trade.
