Ghana's Accra Region Flood Response: Minister Ocloo Announces Emergency Measures

Heavy rains have triggered widespread flooding across Ghana's Greater Accra region, reviving memories of the deadly 2015 deluge that claimed over 150 lives. The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, warned of a high flood alert and outlined a series of emergency actions. Authorities have ordered immediate desilting of gutters and drains, removal of rubbish blocking waterways, and demolition of unauthorised structures that impede water flow. Unauthorised transport terminals and roadside lorry stations are also being cleared.

Response teams from the Ghana National Fire Service, Police Service, Armed Forces and National Ambulance Service have been activated, with relief supplies such as food, mattresses, blankets, first‑aid kits and life jackets positioned at strategic sites. Temporary shelters in schools, community centres and religious facilities are prepared for displaced residents. The Weija Dam has been opened to release excess water and prevent structural damage. Officials are monitoring flood‑prone communities including Kaneshie, Alajo, Odawna, Circle, Weija, Tetegu, Ashalaja, Dansoman, Adabraka, Ashaiman, Tema, Madina, Adenta, Lakeside, Borteyman, Pantang and Kwabenya. Commentators stress that citizen dumping of waste into drains and encroachment on wetlands exacerbate the flooding, calling for stronger enforcement of environmental bylaws.
