Ghana's Bank of Ghana Calls for Action on Digital Fraud and Misinformation

Stanbic Bank Ghana CEO Kwamina Asomaning warned that digital fraud is rapidly increasing and undermining confidence in the country's financial system. He cited a 17 % rise in cyber‑crime losses, with more than GH¢19 million lost between January and September 2025 and 2,008 recorded incidents. In 2024, fraud cases across banks and payment providers rose to 16,733, with the value at risk approaching GH¢100 million. Asomaning called for stronger collaboration among banks, fintech firms, telecom operators, regulators and law‑enforcement to combat phishing, SIM‑swap attacks, account takeovers and other sophisticated schemes.

Bank of Ghana communications director Bernard Otabil warned that misinformation and disinformation threaten economic stability, national security and social cohesion. He announced a nationwide Media Capacity Building Programme aimed at equipping journalists with accurate information, stressing that false reporting can distort markets, cause investor losses and spark public panic. Otabil highlighted global risk assessments that rank misinformation among the top threats and referenced historical instances, such as the role of false broadcasts during the Rwandan genocide, to illustrate the potential damage.
