Ghana’s Bank of Ghana Highlights Community Banking Transformation

The Bank of Ghana praised the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other development partners for helping convert the country’s rural banks into a robust community‑banking system. Deputy Governor Dr. Zakari Mumuni described the change as one of Ghana’s greatest achievements in expanding financial inclusion and supporting local enterprises.

At the 50th‑anniversary ceremony in Accra, Dr. Frank Boateng, vice‑president of the Association of Community Banks, urged Ghanaians to embrace the new identity, noting that the sector now serves townships, market centres and growing urban communities. The legal transition took effect on 31 March 2026 under the Bank of Ghana’s revised Micro‑finance Sector Framework, covering 147 community banks nationwide. The reforms aim to deepen financial inclusion, improve governance and strengthen the resilience of local financial institutions.
