Ghana's Chairman Wontumi EXIM Bank fraud case extended to late August

High‑profile anti‑corruption prosecutions under Ghana's Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative resumed in the Accra High Court from July 27‑31, featuring former Ashanti Regional NPP chairman Bernard Antwi‑Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, and other officials linked to the Sky Train, National Service and cybersecurity procurement scandals.

On July 27 the court granted an adjournment to August 27 for plea‑bargain negotiations in the GH¢30 million EXIM Bank fraud case involving Wontumi and his co‑accused. New lead counsel sought additional time, while Deputy Attorney‑General Dr Justice Srem‑Sai urged a 30‑day limit. Judge Halima Abdul‑Alawa approved the extension, noting the proceedings would continue without prejudice to the negotiations.

The case alleges defrauding by false pretence, forgery, money‑laundering and causing over GH¢30 million loss to a public institution, with the prosecution aiming to resolve the charges through a plea agreement.
