Ghana's financial sector expands with digital payments surpassing cash and community banking boom

Digital payments now account for more than half of all financial transactions in Ghana, according to Abdul Razak Issaka‑Ali of MobileMoney Fintech Limited. He said the country is a "50 to 60 per cent cash‑light economy" and ranks among the top three nations worldwide for digital payments as a share of GDP. The growth reflects collaboration between banks, fintech firms, the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems and the Bank of Ghana, improving accessibility, security and credit opportunities for businesses.

The community banking segment has also surged, reaching 147 licensed institutions with about 1,000 branches and serving over eight million customers. Governor Johnson Asiama of the Bank of Ghana noted the sector’s GH¢26 billion asset base and its origins in rural banking started five decades ago. This expansion is seen as a key driver of financial inclusion, savings mobilisation, agricultural support and local economic development.
