Ghana’s Juaben Municipality Imposes One‑Month Ban on Illegal Mining

National Security forces carried out a large‑scale operation against illegal mining (galamsey) in the Juaben Municipality of Ghana’s Ashanti Region. The operation halted mining at sites in Pemenase, Akronwe and Achia, seized four excavators and ordered a one‑month suspension of all mining activities, directing miners to reclaim the degraded land. Deputy Ashanti Regional National Security Coordinator Alhaji Nje Omar Abdulai warned that confiscated equipment will not be returned and that inspections will be conducted throughout the ban period. Municipal Chief Executive Eunice Ohenewaa Ansu pledged strict enforcement.

The crackdown follows safety concerns after miners set up near the Akronwe‑Wabiri road, creating open pits that threaten motorists. An investigation revealed jurisdictional confusion between Juaben police and neighbouring commands, which the MCE says allows illegal miners to operate unchecked. She has appealed to the Interior Minister to resolve the dispute and grant Juaben police full authority. One of the most affected sites is a concession owned by Charlie and Sons Mining Company Limited, now heavily degraded.

The combined actions aim to protect the environment, public safety and agricultural land while emphasizing responsible mining practices.
