Ghana's Kasoa-Mallam Highway Gridlock and Aflao Market Floods Disrupt Commuters and Trade

Severe deterioration of the Kasoa–Mallam Highway has turned a short commute into a four‑hour ordeal for thousands of commuters travelling to Accra. Deep potholes, collapsed sections and flooding along the SCC‑Old Barrier stretch and at Mallam Junction have forced vehicles onto a single lane, causing long queues, sharply higher fares and increased fuel, maintenance and vehicle‑damage costs. One commuter described the scene, saying, "I have never seen so many people struggling to find transportation," and warned that the delays threaten jobs and income for many residents.

In the border town of Aflao, heavy rains flooded the L‑shaped road around the market, halting trade and injuring merchants. Businessman Akonta Felix Akakpo announced an emergency intervention, deploying 20 truckloads of gravel—12 for the market road and eight for potholes elsewhere in the municipality. He stressed the effort was only a temporary fix, urging authorities to pursue sustainable drainage and road upgrades to prevent recurrent flooding that harms local commerce.
