Ghana's Mahama cites rains as cause of delays in flagship road programme

President John Dramani Mahama said heavy rains across Ghana have slowed work on several projects under the government’s “Big Push” road programme. While inspecting the Kafodzidzi–Aburansa road, he noted that construction timelines have been affected but assured that work will fully resume once the downpour ends. Mahama emphasized the economic importance of feeder roads that connect fishing and farming communities to major highways, confirmed that funding for the programme is in place and announced plans for a second phase of the initiative next year.

Opposition MP Martin Adjei‑Mensah Korsah criticised the administration for launching new infrastructure projects while existing ones remain unfinished. He argued the National Democratic Congress is “obsessed with starting new projects when it cannot complete the existing ones,” and suggested the government is prioritising new contracts to capture additional funding. Korsah called for the completion of projects started under the previous NPP government to maximise job creation and public investment.
