Ghana's NAIMOS disables illegal mining equipment on River Offin
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), supported by the Ghana Navy Special Boat Squadron, has immobilized mining equipment on the River Offin in the Central Region. The operation took place at Nipanekro in the Upper Denkyira West District following previous resistance from Changfan operators.
During the mission, miners reportedly fled as security personnel advanced. Drone footage captured a group of individuals, some allegedly carrying pump-action guns, gathering approximately two miles from the site and threatening to confront the team. NAIMOS personnel maintained their position and exercised restraint to avoid a confrontation.
In response to concerns regarding the task force's methods, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources stated that NAIMOS is mandated to enforce the law through arrests rather than aggression. However, officials noted that the task force may take proportionate action if officers face imminent threats of injury or death.
To support long-term efforts against illegal mining, also known as galamsey, the government plans to allocate GH¢200 million to NAIMOS in the 2027 budget to strengthen its operational capacity.
