Ghana's National Day of Prayer faces criticism amid flood tragedy
Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover said the July 1 National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving should have been turned into a day of mourning for flood victims, calling for minutes of silence for the 32 Ghanaians who died and describing harrowing scenes of families swept away by rising waters.
Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations Elvis Afriyie‑Ankrah defended the observance, stating it is an annual national event planned long before the floods and not a reaction to the disaster. He highlighted the government's relief actions, including the release of funds for displaced persons, and noted that special prayers were offered for victims during the ceremony, stressing the complementary roles of humanitarian aid and spiritual support.
