Ghana's NPP accuses ruling NDC of selective justice over bail conditions

New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye criticised the bail conditions imposed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Economic and Organised Crime Office, describing sums of GH¢800 million, GH¢150 million and GH¢80 million as excessive and alleging they amount to punitive treatment of opposition figures. He said the government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) practices selective justice, pointing to cases such as UniBank and COCOBOD where NDC‑linked individuals received more lenient treatment while opposition members face harsh bail.

The NPP staged a large demonstration in Accra under the banner “Democracy Under Attack”, presenting a petition to the Supreme Court and Jubilee House. The delegation was led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin, General Secretary Osei Kyei‑Mensah‑Bonsu and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, chief of staff to the NPP flag‑bearer.

Senior lawyer Kofi Bentil of IMANI Africa echoed the concerns, stating that the NDC appears more zealous in prosecuting opposition figures than its own members and that a pattern of selective justice may be emerging. He noted that the government’s record over its four‑year mandate will ultimately be judged by the public.
