Ghana's NPP flagbearer Bawumia visits imprisoned Ashanti chairman Wontumi

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia visited Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, at Nsawam Medium Security Prison two days after the High Court sentenced him to 20 years on each of two illegal‑mining counts, to run concurrently.

The NPP described the judgment as politically motivated and said the visit was part of its response to what it calls an unjust decision. Bawumia assured Wontumi of the party’s support, encouraged him to stay strong, and said the party would pursue every lawful avenue to overturn the conviction.

The party has mobilised its legal team, with lead counsel Samuel Atta Akyea preparing an appeal that includes about 20 grounds. Wontumi maintained his innocence, remained optimistic, and expressed confidence that the courts would eventually clear his name.
