Ghana's Shama‑Nyankrom Road Blocked by Drivers Over Potholes

Taxi drivers and commercial motorbike riders on the Shama‑Nyankrom road in Ghana's Western Region blocked the route on June 24 to protest its deteriorating condition. They reported deep potholes and chronic flooding caused by clogged drainage gutters, which they attempted to clear themselves.

The self‑help effort resulted in the road being fully blocked with parked vehicles, causing heavy congestion and delaying haulage trucks serving the Marcopolo and Twyford Keda manufacturing plants. A driver told reporters, "We are not demonstrating; we are only trying to solve the problem ourselves," emphasizing that smaller vehicles could not navigate the road. The drivers appealed to the government and relevant authorities for urgent road rehabilitation and drainage improvements to alleviate the burden on commuters and local businesses.
