Ghana's Sustainable Finance Push Gains International Backing

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) endorsed the Bank of Ghana’s Sustainable Finance Roadmap, calling it a transformative framework that will integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations across banking, insurance, capital markets and pensions. IFC West Africa director Nathalie Kouassi Akon said the roadmap can strengthen the financial system against climate risks and attract long‑term investment, but its success depends on sustained implementation, capacity building and transparent governance. The roadmap was developed with IFC advisory support and funding from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, involving the Ministry of Finance, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the National Insurance Commission, the National Pensions Regulatory Authority and professional bodies.

Meanwhile, Ghana Export‑Import Bank signed up to the United Nations Global Compact. CEO Sylvester Adinam Mensah said the membership boosts the bank’s global credibility and embeds the UNGC’s ten principles into its operations. The bank has set up a dedicated Sustainability and Strategic Impact Department, adopted comprehensive sustainability policies and incorporated ESG criteria into its credit assessment process, ensuring that projects it finances meet environmental and social standards.
