Ghana vs Panama World Cup opener set as Thomas Partey barred by Canada visa

Ghana will open its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Panama in Group L at BMO Field in Toronto on 17 June. Coach Carlos Queiroz said the Black Stars are prepared and will treat the match as a must‑win, highlighting the support of fans in Canada.

Midfielder Thomas Partey, a key player for Ghana, was denied entry to Canada after immigration officials deemed him inadmissible because of pending rape and sexual‑assault charges in the United Kingdom. A Canadian federal court dismissed his appeal, meaning he will miss the Panama game. Ghana will therefore field a reshuffled midfield, relying on players such as Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo.

Panama also entered the match without star midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla, who remains on the bench due to a muscle injury. Both sides are looking for a positive start to improve their chances of reaching the knockout stage against the backdrop of the visa controversy surrounding Partey.
