Ghana's University Teachers Association suspends planned nationwide strike after government pact

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) announced the suspension of a nationwide strike that had been set to begin on 6 July 2026. The decision follows written commitments from the government to address the lecturers’ demands on conditions of service, with the Ministry of Finance and related agencies already beginning to implement parts of the agreed welfare package.

UTAG General Secretary Dr Joe Harrison said the breakthrough resulted from a series of emergency stakeholder meetings and that the union will closely monitor the government’s implementation, warning that the strike could be reinstated if the promises are not fulfilled.

The union also condemned recent remarks by former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who suggested that programmes such as Development Studies were unnecessary, arguing that university education should not be reduced to immediate job‑market needs.
