Ghana's Wa Court Imposes 10-Year Term for Child Defilement

The Wa High Court in Ghana sentenced 42‑year‑old Elyasu Kunateh to ten years’ imprisonment with hard labour after finding him guilty of defiling a seven‑year‑old boy. The crime was reported on 17 January 2026, and the suspect was arrested three days later following a complaint by the victim’s mother. Investigators from the Upper West Regional Police Command’s Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) referred the child for medical examination and provided psychosocial support.

Justice Osei‑Wusu Antwi presided over the trial, which concluded on 23 July 2026, and ordered the sentence. The police command reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and urged the public to report suspected child abuse promptly.
