GHATEX launches $400,000 national road safety campaign in Ghana

The Ghana Tourism Authority Ex‑Staff Association (GHATEX) inaugurated a five‑year Road Travel Safety and Tourism Project on 4 August 2026 at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra. Funded with US$400,000, the initiative aims to cut road traffic accidents and bolster Ghana’s tourism image through public education, animated videos, drama sketches and multilingual messages in English and local languages.

The campaign is a joint effort with the Ghana Tourism Authority, the National Road Safety Authority and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts. GHATEX President Adeline Boateng highlighted that unsafe roads deter visitors, while GTA CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto cited a recent convoy incident that shook foreign ministers’ confidence. Stakeholders from government, transport operators, insurers and media were called to support the effort, which coincides with the anniversary of Ghana’s 1974 switch from left‑ to right‑hand driving.
