Gheorghe Brînza investigated for threatening NordNews journalists

The General Prosecutor's Office of Moldova has launched an investigation into threats made against NordNews journalists by Gheorghe Brînza, the former director of the Bălți Clinical Hospital. The action follows a public appeal by the Center for Independent Journalism and various media organizations.

The intimidation began in February 2025 after NordNews published an investigation into a potential conflict of interest involving Brînza and the employment of his father-in-law at the hospital. During that period, journalists reported receiving aggressive calls and voice messages, including one in which Brînza threatened to “take revenge” on them.

Despite the threats, NordNews continued its reporting on the former director's activities, hospital procurement, and family assets. In August 2025, Brînza was detained by the National Anticorruption Center and subsequently sent to trial on charges of passive corruption, which he denies.
