Gheorghe Hagi outlines goals for Romanian national team

Gheorghe Hagi, the head coach of the Romanian national football team, held a press conference on August 17, 2026, to discuss his strategic plans and the current state of Romanian football. Hagi emphasized that his primary objective for the upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign is to win the group, which includes opponents Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, and Sweden.

Regarding player selection, Hagi revealed a five-tier evaluation system—ranging from ‘good’ to ‘genius’—to identify players capable of making a difference. He expressed concern over the need for more investment in youth academies and infrastructure to ensure long-term success. Hagi also addressed the situation of Denis Drăguș, noting that the striker must find a new club quickly to maintain the match fitness required for the national team.

While discussing the squad, Hagi and analysts noted the challenge of an aging roster and the necessity of integrating younger talents to prepare for the EURO 2028 qualifiers. Hagi intends to use the Nations League as a developmental laboratory to build a winning mentality and a more aggressive playing style.
