Ghi Meregalli, founder of Monza's Historical Reenactment, passes away
Ghi Meregalli, known as the ‘lady of Monza,’ passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the age of 86. A prominent figure in the city, she was the founder and driving force behind the Monza Historical Reenactment (Rievocazione Storica), an event that has been a local tradition for over forty years.
Meregalli dedicated her life to teaching and promoting the history of Monza. Under her leadership, the annual June procession grew from a local initiative into a major event featuring hundreds of performers in period costumes, medieval markets, and historical displays. She also established the Monza Historical Reenactment Committee to ensure the event's continuity.
Beyond cultural preservation, Meregalli integrated philanthropy into her work, directing proceeds from the festivities to charitable organizations, including the Maria Letizia Verga Committee. Her funeral is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 29, at 10:45 AM in the Monza Cathedral. Local officials and community members have expressed profound grief over the loss of a woman who served as a vital custodian of the city's heritage.
