GHIT Fund launches NTDpedia to raise awareness of neglected tropical diseases
The Global Health Innovative Technology (GHIT) Fund has launched “NTDpedia: Your Guide to Neglected Tropical Diseases,” an interactive digital encyclopedia designed to increase public awareness of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The initiative aims to combat societal apathy and the lack of funding that hinders research and development for these conditions, which affect approximately 1.5 billion people globally.
Supervised by Professor Kenji Hirayama of Nagasaki University, the platform covers 21 disease groups recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), including bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections, as well as snakebite envenoming. The website categorizes information to help users understand how NTDs relate to global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and sanitation.
GHIT Fund CEO Osamu Kunii stated that the greatest barrier to ending NTDs is not only a lack of medical tools but also a lack of awareness. By making these diseases understandable to a general audience, the fund hopes to drive the public support necessary to break the cycle of poverty and disease.
