Ghost jobs phenomenon impacts job seekers
A growing trend of “ghost jobs” is affecting job seekers, where companies post vacancies without a genuine intention to hire. A 2024 study by Resume Builder indicates that up to 40 percent of job advertisements may fall into this category.
Research from the platform Greenhouse suggests that one third of respondents report experiencing total silence after submitting applications. While the issue is particularly prevalent in the United States, it is also occurring in Sweden, including for management-level positions.
In response to the issue, New York has implemented stricter legislation. Employers are now required to disclose whether a posting is a genuine vacancy and provide a target date for filling the position. If there is no intention to hire within 90 days, this must be explicitly stated in the advertisement.
