Ghost towns of Trentino-Alto Adige mapped

In the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy, several abandoned villages and 'ghost towns' serve as historical markers of floods, plagues, and forced migrations. Notable sites include Curon Vecchia, famous for its bell tower emerging from Lake Resia, and Irone in Val Rendena, which was abandoned following a 17th-century plague.

Other significant locations include Ischiazza and Maso in Valfloriana, both depopulated following a 1966 flood, as well as Pimunt in Val Rendena, which saw abandonment during the latter half of the 20th century. These sites represent a geography of abandonment where nature is gradually reclaiming former settlements.
