Gia Dinh People's Hospital treats infant with rare skin disease

Gia Dinh People's Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City recently treated and discharged a premature infant diagnosed with Lamellar Ichthyosis, a rare genetic skin disorder. The boy was born at 35 weeks via cesarean section weighing 3.1 kg.

Upon birth, the infant exhibited respiratory distress, severely dry, cracked, and shiny skin, as well as ectropion (eyelids turning outward) and stretched lips that hindered nursing. Medical staff focused on intensive skin care to maintain moisture, prevent dehydration, and protect the skin barrier against infection, while also providing respiratory support via nCPAP.

After 12 days of treatment, the infant's skin and eye conditions improved, respiratory function stabilized, and he was able to consume milk entirely before being discharged. Doctors noted that while the skin dryness and peeling have subsided, ongoing skin care and follow-up monitoring are essential.
