Gia Lai tornado damages 22 homes in Ia Chia commune
A tornado struck Ia Chia commune in Gia Lai province on the night of August 19, causing significant damage to local residences and infrastructure. The storm primarily impacted the Bia Ngo village, affecting 22 homes. Reports indicate that three households suffered heavy damage, including one kitchen that collapsed completely, while others experienced roof damage or cracked walls.
Local authorities, including the military, police, and the Ia Chia Border Guard Station, have been working to assist residents, many of whom belong to the Jrai ethnic minority group. As of August 22, approximately 80% of the repair work has been completed. The preliminary estimated damage is around 710 million VND, affecting not only housing but also industrial crops, fruit trees, and household assets.
Efforts are also underway to repair damaged power lines and poles. Authorities have temporarily relocated families with unsafe housing to community centers or relatives' homes and are monitoring weather conditions to prevent further risks from potential landslides or flash floods.
